Research Indicates Steroid Abuse May Contribute to Developing Bay Area Gum Disease

Friday, September 4, 2009

Bay Area Periodntist uses a laser and reports that a study Finds That Steroid Abuse May be Linked to Enlargement of the Gums.

Anabolic Steroids are synthetic hormones that are prescribed by doctors to treat an array of health complications including anemia, breast cancer, increase weight gain due to illness, and osteoporosis. While steroids have a valid use in the medical community as a sought after treatment, they are also often abused by body builders and athletes to enhance muscle development and athletic performance. Abuse of steroids can have many side effects and life threatening results. More recently, researchers have also linked steroid abuse to gingival enlargement, which could increase the risk of developing Bay Area gum disease.

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology, steroid abuse has been linked to enlargement of the gum tissue and an increase in gingival inflammation. Gingival overgrowth occurs when the gums become swollen and grow over the teeth. The enlargement of the gums makes it prone to bacteria development and provides a place for bacteria to accumulate. Eventually, the bacteria will begin to attack the teeth and supporting bone structures, leaving patients more susceptible to developing periodontal disease which could result in tooth decay and loss.
While more research is needed to determine if the gingival enlargement is a direct result of the steroid abuse, researchers do know that the steroid abusers studied had a higher rate of gingival inflammation and enlargement than non steroid abusers. Researchers hope to isolate the steroid abuse in future studies, so they can rule out the gingival inflammation occurring as a result of poor oral hygiene or other environmental factors.

Gingival enlargement has been known to occur in other patients as a result of a hormonal change in the body. Hormonal changes occur during different life cycles of individuals, including puberty, menopause and the menstrual cycle. Regardless of the finalized research becoming available, patients should know that steroids are dangerous and have an array of side effects that could result in poor health and even life threatening consequences. Researchers still do not know if the gingival enlargement would regress with discontinued use, nor is it confirmed that other side effects would dissolve as a result of discontinuing the abuse of steroids. Gingival inflammation if left untreated could lead to an increased risk of developing Bay Area Gum disease.

Bay Area Gum Disease Could Hold That Frown Upside-Down

Friday, July 17, 2009

It should come as no surprise that a bright, healthy smile could lead to more smiling. When we feel confident about our appearance, that self-belief shines through for all to see. However, even the slightest flaw can cause us to shy away from social situations, which is often the case with periodontal disease.
For residents in the Bay Area gum disease may be prevented or improved with the help of a qualified periodontist or dentist. Since conditions like gum disease can ultimately result in tooth loss, it is important to take care of the situation as soon as possible.

The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recently conducted a study that focused on the implications of gum disease in relation to self-confidence. As expected, their research determined that periodontal disease may cause a person to avoid smiling.

The study, which appeared in the Journal of Periodontology (JOP), examined the smiling patterns of 21 periodontal patients. The group was asked to watch a humorous program, while researchers observed their respective reactions. As a result, it became evident that more advanced the symptoms – such as loose teeth – the stronger the compulsion to limit the smile or cover the mouth.

Even the level of gum recession was directly correlated to the wideness of the smile; those battling significant recessing showed less teeth than the other participants.

Horizontal mouth width, open mouth width, and the number of teeth showing during the smile were all taken into consideration. Researchers also focused on the impact of oral health on each patient’s quality of life, followed by a clinical exam and an assessment based on their findings.

The findings of the study suggest that oral health is connected to more than systemic health. Researchers are now proposing that oral conditions like gum disease can have emotional and social effects as well. If a patient smiles less due to the repercussions of periodontal disease, it only makes sense that confidence is bound to decrease as a result.

While taking care of your teeth and gums is a crucial part of your overall well-being, reducing the risk of emotional effects makes the effort all the more worthwhile. With so many adults suffering from gum disease, it’s important to seek expert oral care regularly.
